Genealogy Program & Expo: “Looking For History In Family Trees”
Explore the importance of African American family history research at this program and genealogy expo, presented by the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in partnership with the Baltimore Chapter of the Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society. Visitors can meet local genealogists and examine historical materials such as freedom papers, ancestral photographs, church founders’ records, Civil War service records, and stock certificates from a family-owned Northern Virginia telephone business.
The program also features educator and historian Dr. Brian Morrison, who will discuss youth initiatives encouraging the next generation to investigate their lineage. Historians Chris Haley of the Maryland State Archives and Dr. Martha Jones of Johns Hopkins University will discuss their own family trees and historical legacies. Haley will reflect on the 50th anniversary of *ROOTS: The Saga of an American Family*, while Jones will discuss her book *The Trouble of Color: An American Family Memoir* and its account of her family history alongside broader questions of race and color. A book signing follows the program.
