Comedian Charlene Kaye Tiger Daughter: Or, How I Brought My Immigrant Mother Ultimate Shame
Charlene Kaye’s solo comedy show, *Tiger Daughter: Or, How I Brought My Immigrant Mother Ultimate Shame*, blends humor, emotion, and rock ’n’ roll. Presented by Margaret Cho and directed by Jennifer Monaco, the show explores Kaye’s relationship with her Chinese immigrant mother and the fallout from rejecting her mother’s vision of a Carnegie Hall-bound daughter.
Instead of pursuing that classical-music dream, Kaye became a guitarist and a “slutty shredder” in the all-female Guns N’ Roses tribute band Guns N’ Hoses. The performance examines family expectations, rebellion, cultural identity, and the complicated American Dream, including the irony that Kaye’s mother secretly wanted to become a famous singer herself. Kaye says the show reveals the private story behind the musician persona she has shared publicly for two decades. She also describes its central idea as broadly relatable: audiences do not need to be Asian to understand disappointing a parent.
The production follows sold-out engagements at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Melbourne International Comedy Festival and is touring the United States. It is produced by Adam Gold of AGI Entertainment.
