Flaunt
Flaunt: When Appearance Speaks is the American Visionary Art Museum’s 31st major thematic exhibition. It brings together 100 works spanning drawing, portraiture, photography, fiber, wearable art, and sculpture, including pieces made with transformed everyday materials such as buttons, pipe cleaners, and bark.
Rather than asking visitors to look beneath the surface, the exhibition examines how emotion, invention, humor, protection, and self-authorship can be communicated through appearance. Featured works include Montrel Beverly’s *Cowboy Boots (Hers)*, Lucy Walker’s *Finty-African Hunting Dog*, Shawn Payne’s *Space Heels*, Beau McCall’s button-and-denim *Button Yoke: Blue I*, Helen Rae’s *Untitled (October 1, 2014)*, Eugene Von Bruenchenhein’s clay-and-paint *Untitled (crown)*, and Maria “Maima” Tani’s *Coral Dress*.
