The Nutcracker
Ballet Theatre of Maryland’s *The Nutcracker*, directed by Artistic Director Nicole Kelsch, offers a locally inspired retelling of the holiday ballet. Set in 19th-century Annapolis, the production follows Clara through a magical world of family history, a naval battle between the Nutcracker and the Rat King, shimmering snow, and a Kingdom of Confections populated by characters such as Caramel, Popcorn, Peppermint, crabs, and oysters. The production features exuberant dancing, beloved characters, and Tchaikovsky’s familiar score for audiences of all ages.
The staging emphasizes Annapolis history and regional character while preserving the wonder of the traditional story. Sunday performances at Maryland Hall include a Sugar Plum Party one hour before the show, with opportunities to take pictures with favorite characters and enjoy light refreshments.
