Out of the Past

Jacques Tourneur’s *Out of the Past* follows a former private investigator whose earlier connections pull him back into the dangerous world of a merciless gambler and the gambler’s captivating associate. Robert Mitchum stars alongside Kirk Douglas and Jane Greer in this hardboiled film noir, widely regarded as Tourneur’s artistic high point and a major work following his better-known horror classic *Cat People*.

The story descends into betrayal and chaos as the investigator becomes entangled with his old associates. Pulp novelist James M. Cain is also reported to have made an uncredited contribution to the screenplay.
