Everybody to Kenmure Street (followed by panel discussion)
Everybody to Kenmure Street is a documentary about a remarkable act of community resistance in Pollokshields, Scotland. In May 2021, a dawn raid by the UK Home Office to detain people for deportation prompted hundreds of residents to take to the streets and prevent the removal of their neighbors in one of the area’s most diverse communities.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion about how communities build collective power, prepare for moments of crisis, and transform relationships among neighbors into organized action. Panelists include youth organizer Mayrene Benítez Mena of Students Organizing a Multicultural + Open Society (SOMOS); Dr. Peter Smith, a longtime UMB School of Social Work clinical instructor and Baltimore psychotherapist who also serves as an independent Catholic priest at St. Charles of Brazil Parish in Linthicum; a speaker, educator, and immigrant activist representing Sanctuary Streets Baltimore; filmmaker and activist Mark Jeevaratnam of the Baltimore chapter of Malaya Movement; and community organizer and activist Perla Hernandez of We Are CASA.
