Slow Balboa Workshop with Amanda Gerken and David Lee
Slow Balboa Workshop with Amanda Gerken and David Lee is designed for dancers who want to feel more comfortable when a slow jazz ballad comes on. The workshop welcomes dancers who know some Balboa as well as those who have begun exploring Slow Balboa and want a refresher before Stardust Slow Balboa Weekend. Drawing on the dance’s historical development while incorporating contemporary ideas, Amanda and David will help participants develop tools for creating their own Slow Balboa and enjoying it on the social dance floor.
Some swing-dance experience is required, particularly comfort dancing in a close hold, but extensive Balboa experience is not necessary. Amanda Gerken is a social dancer, teacher, choreographer, and competitor who focuses on Balboa and Slow Balboa. She teaches with David through Capital City Shuffle, competes nationally, and founded and organizes Stardust Slow Balboa Weekend. David Lee has been swing dancing since 2006 and works across styles including Lindy Hop, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, St. Louis Shag, and Charleston. He is recognized for his musicality and creativity, as well as for explaining dance mechanics in ways that work for dancers with different learning styles.
