August Wilson's Jitney
August Wilson’s *Jitney* follows a group of Black men trying to earn a living as drivers for a makeshift taxi service in Pittsburgh’s Hill District in 1977. When Jim Becker’s son, Clarence, returns from prison, the struggling cab company reaches a turning point, bringing buried resentments and personal conflicts to the surface. The drivers include Fielding, who battles alcoholism; Turnbo, a gossip with a comic streak; and Youngblood, an earnest and principled worker.
Produced in partnership with the Baltimore August Wilson Celebration, this is the seventh play in Wilson’s American Century Cycle. Although it is eighth in the cycle’s chronology, *Jitney* was the first play in the series to be written and produced.
